A TRIP TO FLORIDA - BY CAR  by

 Dan Willie
1/31/2008 at 21:57
The Canadian winters are long and cold and by March we are longing for the warm sunshine. This is the time of year that many Canadians head south to find out what’s taking the warm sunshine so long to get here. The state that we head for is Florida. Many choose to jump on a plane and are there in a matter of hours. Then there are those of us who would rather pile everything in the car so that we can see the countryside. There are many sites and experiences that we would have missed had we traveled by plane.

The one thing that we enjoyed the most was watching the change in the weather as we traveled south. Of course New York State’s weather was pretty much the same as what we had left behind. Pennsylvania’s weather was a little better. We really didn’t notice a big change until we entered Virginia. This was the point that I was starting to get excited about our trip and I knew that even better weather wasn’t far away. The Carolina’s weather was warmer still, with a mix of rain and sunshine and no snow. Georgia’s weather was perfect and we ran into the welcome center at the border to get our shorts on. We had found the warm sunshine. It had only made it to Georgia.

Finally we arrived in Florida. Sun was shinning, the palm trees swaying in the warm breeze and I could feel myself almost thawed out. By traveling ...

TEN ESSENTIAL THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU VISIT SWITZERLAND  by

 Jonathan Williams
1/31/2008 at 21:56
Because Switzerland is a just a small country, its attractions are near each other and can be reached quite easily. Mountain resorts, lakes, forests, castles, museums, and ancient and modern architecture make this federal republic an excellent tourist destination. With its low crime rate, it is also very safe for tourists.

1.) The Jungfrau Region

The Jungfrau Region offers spectacular scenery to bewitch the eye. The white peaks of three towering mountains-the Jungfrau, Monch, and Eiger-contrast with the green valleys and meadows in this Alpine wonderland. Enjoy the fresh mountain air while visiting this place.

2.) Chateau de Chillon, Montreux

The town of Montreux is located in the heart of the Swiss Riviera on the shores of Lake Geneva. Walk by the lakeside and explore the Chillon Castle, or take a tour of the tower, courtyards, dungeons, and rooms of this eleventh-century castle, the most frequently visited historical building in Switzerland where its numerous rooms house weaponry, frescoes, and furniture. The castle can be reached by walking along the lakefront or taking the train or trolley bus.

3.) Fasnacht Spring Carnival, Basel

Be sure to visit Basel, Switzerland’s second largest city for the Fasnacht Spring carnival. Its world-famous three-day carnival features participants in colorful costumes and masks parading in the streets. The carnival starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, and cafes and bars are open all night as confetti, sweets, and flowers are thrown to the crowd.

4.) Swiss National Park, Zernez

The Swiss Natural Park is 169 square kilometers of mountains and woodland. It is home ...

HOLIDAYING WITH KIDS - SEVEN MUST DO’S FOR A GREAT TIME  by

 Jenny Mac
1/31/2008 at 21:55
If you are a single parent, here’s how to make your holiday away with the kids relaxing and fun and one you will all look back on fondly.

1) If you have like minded friends or families with kids, try and go on holiday with them. Ask them well in advance so that schedules and finances can be arranged. Travelling alone with children can be daunting, but if you have someone to share the experience with, then go for it. Plus it’ll be great to have a friend to hang out with.

2) Make sure you book a resort etc. that is child friendly. There is no point turning up to a resort that mainly caters for young adults, who naturally want to have a very loud time. It simply will not work when all you want is peace and quiet for you and the kids.

3) Book as far in advance as possible so that you can realise your requirements. If you need a family room, ask for one at the time of booking. On receipt of your documents, check again that you have been allocated what you asked for. If not, get on the phone to the hotel and try your best to get it all sorted out before you arrive. Once there, check things like cots etc. for safety. Just be sure that the bed you’re putting your child in to sleep, is up to standard: remember, different countries have different ideas about what is considered safe.

4) Make sure you ...

SRI LANKA - THE PEARL OF THE INDIAN OCEAN  by

 Andrew Regan
1/31/2008 at 21:54
As the fanfare of the festive season has died down, it is easy to feel the need to get away from the cold British winter and experience some sun. For a luxury holiday offering the requisite sunrays as well as excellent cuisine, views and different festivals throughout the year, look no further than Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island nation in South Asia, located about 19 miles off the southern coast of India. With a population of around 20 million, the country is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic, with nearly a third of the population following faiths other than Buddhism, most notably Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. This multiculturalism can in part be attributed to the different rules of Sri Lanka, including colonisation by Portugal, the Netherlands and finally Great Britain. After peaceful negotiations with the British, the island nation became independent in 1948, and in 1972, the nation, then-known as Ceylon, changed its name to Sri Lanka, meaning "Resplendent Land".

As a result of the multi-religious background, Sri Lanka is renowned for its many religious festivals. Sri Lanka offers at least one festival each month as Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims celebrate both religious and national occasions. This month, for example, the full-moon festival of Dututhu commemorates the visit of Lord Buddha to Kelankya, the temple of Kelania. The Hindu community meanwhile celebrates the harvest festival of Thai Pongal, where homes are cleaned and decorated, farm animals bathed and sometimes adorned, and ...

WAYS TO BE COMFORTABLE WHILE FLYING  by

 Tom Tessin
1/31/2008 at 21:53
If you’ve never flown before or you have flown a million times, you have to know that it’s important to be comfortable when you’re flying in the air. Just like being at home or at the office, it’s never fun to be sitting around feeling uncomfortable all the time. We’ve put together a little list on how you can feel great when you thousands of feet up in the air.

Reserve a great seat

When you first book your flight, try and get a seat near the aisle or near the front. If you can get the front row, this will be great for you because they offer a lot of leg room and it almost feels like you’re in first class for the coach price. The reason why you’ll want to get an aisle seat is because you’ll be able to stretch your legs every once in awhile in the aisle. If you’re near the window, it’s impossible to do so and you may find your legs cramping up. An aisle seat is great if you need to get up and use the bathroom as well.

Bring your entertainment

Nobody likes to fly for hours without any entertainment. When you fly, you usually can’t rely on the airline to carry great entertainment. This is why you should bring your own source of entertainment. It’s usually best to bring mp3 players, portable movie players, magazines, and other things that may keep you entertained to your liking.

Sit and Forget

The best thing you can do when ...

A GLANCE AT THE FUTURE OF ONLINE TRAVEL INDUSTRY  by

 Naveen Marasinghe
1/31/2008 at 21:52
The Internet which was virtually unknown to masses a couple of decades ago has now become the life blood of many economies and societies. This global phenomenon has brought the human kind closer than ever before. Ranging from information websites to novel concepts of social networking, Internet has become a way of life for many people.

According to Internetworldstats.com only 16 million people used the Internet in 1995, where as today over 1200 million surf the cyber space which amounts to nearly 20% of the world population. The growth of the Internet has created a whole new dimension in doing business as well. The speed of information and the convenience has made online a promising venture for many markets.

In travel industry around a decade ago, travel agents had a better say when it came to selling travel solutions than its original providers such as airlines and hotels etc. But today the increased use of online travel has made it easy for the consumer to plan and book their travel needs easily on their own over the Internet. Hotels, airlines and other travel service providers are able to directly get in touch with customers through the Internet.

Online travel portals and websites also have an upper hand over conventional travel agents on costs as well. The traditional travel agent requires more manpower and huge investments to expand its business where as an online portal can get in touch with the whole world through a single domain purchase. However, the intense competition among online ...

THE DISABLED TRAVELER AND AIRPORT SECURITY  by

 Candy Harrington
1/31/2008 at 21:52
With heightened security measures in place at airports across the US, most travelers have to arrive early, say their good byes at check-in and make sure they don’t have any sharp objects in their carry-on baggage. But do airport security measures actually take the needs of passengers with disabilities under consideration? Fortunately they do; but as with all access-related issues, some advance planning is necessary.

Here are a few tips to help you out.

• Allow plenty of extra time to get through security, especially if you wear a prosthesis or use any type of assistive device.

• If you can’t walk or go through the metal detector, tell the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent. You will be hand-wanded and given a pat-down search.

• If you tire easily or can’t stand for long periods of time, request a chair during the screening process.

• Slow walkers should request a wheelchair at check-in. This will expedite the screening process as wheelchair-users are usually fast-tracked through security.

• Canes and walkers are allowed through security checkpoints, but they will be inspected thoroughly by security personnel.

• Prosthetic devices do not have to be removed for screening; however the screener will manually inspect the device and swab it for explosive residue.

• You have the right to a private screening and to have a companion present during that screening.

• You are not required to remove your shoes if your disability prevents you from doing so. You will however be subject to a pat-down search and your shoes will be swabbed.

• ...

KEEP CHILDREN ENTERTAINED ON LONG FLIGHTS  by

 Jez Rourke
1/31/2008 at 21:49
There is nothing as incredible as a family vacation somewhere exotic and far away. The only trouble with that is that the most exotic and far away locations are, well, far away! You may feel great once you have removed yourself from the hassles of home, and the farther away they are, the better it sometimes feels, but getting there can be especially stressful in itself, and it is really difficult when there are children who are going to be coming along for the ride.

There are ways to break up your flights when you are traveling over a single continent, with multiple stops in multiple places to make your vacation that much more varied and keep your kids from losing interest or from getting bored because they are sitting for too long in one place.

If you have kids and you are crossing an ocean for your vacation, though, there are not really many convenient ways to break up your flight and let your kids relax and unwind a little, as anyone who has ever traveled from the United States to Australia well knows. Keeping your kids entertained for these long periods of time can be a difficult challenge.

If you are going to be on long flights with your kids, there are things that you can do to help things run as smoothly as possible. For one thing, when you get to the airport, lead them in activities that can be quietly active. Have a competition for who can do the ...
