THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN GETTING A TENNIS BAG  by

 Gregg Hall
1/31/2008 at 20:31
When you are playing tennis you are going to need to carry your equipment so that may mean that you need to get yourself a tennis bag. When you are getting a tennis bag all you need to get it for is to carry balls and your racket for playing the game of tennis. What else are you going to use a tennis bag for? Nothing, that is why you go buy yourself tennis bag so you can tote your balls and all the things that you could possibly need for playing tennis.

You will first need to check with yourself and ask yourself how much stuff I have and how much stuff do I need to bring with me when I go to play tennis. That is all up to you because only you knows what you will need to play the sport. You may just need a few balls and your racket or you may need a whole net spray paint and balls and a huge water jug. You will never know what you may need when you are playing tennis. You may need an extra set of clothes to change into after your game. When you are playing tennis you will need to buy what you need and what you are actually going to use.

If you are a serious tennis player then you may already have a bag to carry all your tennis gear in but if you don’t then you should go out to sports authority or ...

IMPROVE YOUR TENNIS STRATEGY  by

 Alon Vot
1/31/2008 at 20:27
Perfecting your strokes is a never ending process which is critical for your tennis game. However, understanding and implementing different strategies is not any less important, and in many cases is the determining factor in prevailing over your opponent.

There is no one "cookie-cutter" strategy that works for all players. Obviously, different players have their own style of playing, and would like to adjust their game to benefit the most of their best shots. This could mean running around the backhand for a player with a great forehand, serve and volley for a big server, or approaching the net at any opportunity for a great net player.

Players also adjust their strategy to gain an edge over their opponent. For example, when playing against an inconsistent player, you just might want to keep the ball in play and not "go for it" too often, letting your opponent make the mistake. Playing to your opponent’s weakest shot is another example.

Nonetheless, there are general "rules" that can be used as the frame on which to build your strategy.

Hit cross-court from the baseline

During a baseline rally, hitting the ball cross-court is typically advantageous to hitting down the line. The main reason concerns your position on the court, as well as your opponent’s position. Hitting cross-court creates an angle that can force your opponent to hit his/her next shot from beyond the sideline. Not only will he/she need to run faster in order to reach that ball, but he will also leave the other side of ...

ARE CHAMPIONS BORN OR MADE? IS THE ANSWER IN THE GENES?  by

 Sergio Cruz
1/31/2008 at 20:26
This is a continuation of the article "Donkey wins the Tennis Australian Open 2008 title!" Why are then Champions indeed born? If so then what separates the tennis champions from the regular tennis players and what are the tell-tale signs of champion material being on the tennis court?

First, I am going to answer the second question, this is an extract from a presentation by Frank Slezak at the European Tennis Symposium for Coaches 2006, a top Tcheckoslovakian Tennis Coach and experienced in working and observing developing world class tennis junior players for many years.

"The psycho-motor qualities of future junior champions he identifies:

1 - High coordinative level

Important For:

* Quick and efficient learning

* Better problem solving in difficult situations

* Efficient court coverage

* Economic stroke production and movement

* Level of co-ordinations can be developed partially in the long term through the practice of multi-sports (general co-ordination) and the practice of different aspects of tennis (specific co-ordinations), nevertheless restricted to critical periods for its development.

* Hard to test, only through observation in other sports

Signs of good co-ordinations:

* Plays economically

* Strokes are fluid

* Is able to apply power without effort

* Learns how to serve without problems

2 - High level of general velocity

- One of the essential conditions for specific velocity (court coverage) (coupled with coordination, ...

WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO BEFORE A MAJOR TENNIS EVENT  by

 Sergio Cruz
1/31/2008 at 20:25
The tennis season has barely begun, the first Grand Slam is about to start and I thought it would be appropriate to talk about small things that can be important to succeed in a major tournament.

The scenario I will develop is for contestants with a chance at winning a Grand Slam. The location is Melbourne, Australia, Australian Open. You can extrapolate this to any tournament of importance with identical conditions.

Many players, either by sheer anxiety or because they do not think they are well prepared for a major event, tend to overtrain and to enter a series of events that in the end are counter productive for the tournament where they really want to do well.

EXAMPLES OF WHAT NOT TO DO:

- Over extend yourselves in extremely long practice matches or tournament matches the week before a major event.

- Enter 2 or even 3 tournaments in a row before a Grand Slam or a Major tennis event.

-Enter an ATP/WTA professional Tournament the week preceding a Grand Slam or a Major tennis event. This is a NO NO for a title candidate...especially if you consider yourself one. Take Roger Federer as an example.

- Overtrain or train too hard the week preceding a Grand Slam or a Major tennis event thinking that you need extra training hours in order to feel confident. Instead it is time for tapering.

- Go to the gym and "pump some iron" the week before a Grand Slam or a Major tennis event.

- Go for long runs the week ...

GETTING MATCH TOUGH FOR TENNIS  by

 Mario Olivera
1/31/2008 at 20:25
It has been said that the sport of tennis is a chess game when it has players who are at the same level. Why is then that one player seems to always pull out a victory over an equal opponent. By implementing a specific tennis strategy, or mental toughness if you will, you will more than likely come out on as the winner. Tennis has a gentlemen’s competitive spirit that brings a ray of light to the sport. Have you ever wondered how your friend all of a sudden started beating a person each time they played after losing many times initially? There are simple explanations of just becoming faster and being more fit, but what comes with that are improved skills and mental recognition during match play to execute shots in certain situations.

What you may see is better shot making, what a coach sees is someone who now hits the right shot at the right time, plays the percentages, and knows his or her opponent’s game. Upon recognizing your opponents, weaknesses, you can now start to effectively employ a strategy to win. In the beginning, you may not be able to do this but with repetition, it will improve and you will find yourself winning more sets.

For example, if you are losing to a serve and volley player, employ if you can, what world No.1 Roger Federer does and chip or slice returns back "low" to them feet and make them volley up. By having them volley up, it ...

MENTAL TENNIS TOUGHNESS - WIN THOSE BIG TENNIS MATCHES  by

 Matthias Mazur
1/31/2008 at 20:23
When you are getting ready to play a big tennis match, it can be very difficult to stay focused and keep your head cool. There are many things that you want to remember, because they can make the key difference in you winning or losing. Tennis is such a physical game, but as you certainly know, it is even more a mental game. By learning tennis mental techniques and tips that will give you the advantage, you will always have the upper hand in a big match.

How to control your nerves

You always want to remember that although you may be nervous, your opponent may be just as nervous as you are, if not even more nervous than you. This is especially true if your opponent is ranked higher than you are. He is expected to win and is thrust into the spotlight in this way. So, he has everything to lose, and you have everything to gain. By being aware of this simple mind shift, you can become less nervous and hopefully your opponent’s nerves will go haywire.

Remember that your opponent is struggling just as you are. He even might be worrying about things you couldn’t even imagine. You never know when they might be dealing with a nagging injury, or having an off day or whatever else he might be dealing with. Remember that it’s not all on you.

Start Off Easy

When you’re playing in a large and important match, many players make the mistake of starting off by playing ...

SOME OF THE MORE COMMON TENNIS INJURIES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM  by

 Gregg Hall
1/31/2008 at 20:19
When you are playing the game of tennis you are susceptible to many injuries like tearing ligaments, tearing tendons, pulling ligaments, pulling tendons, anything can happen when you are playing the game of tennis. You can be running and then pull your calf muscle and then it is over. After you hurt yourself playing tennis it will be even harder to get back in shape to where you can play the sport hard like you did before. If you are a person that can get in shape quick then you should already be flexible and shouldn’t have gotten an injury. So when you are playing tennis you will want to be careful as you are running across court for the ball.

When you are playing tennis one of the most common injuries is an injury to the elbow. When you get this kind of injury you are almost hurting your elbow itself because you are hurting the ligaments and the tendons that are so close to it that it just feels like you messed up your elbow but its really not. Like I said before the elbow injury is the most common injury that you can get when playing the game of tennis. You can also hurt many other things while playing like your legs your arms and your back. You can hurt your back very easy by be stationary and swinging too hard. You can hurt your back very bad doing that while trying to play tennis.

The other highly common ...

SOME GREAT EXERCISE TIPS TO KEEP YOU IN SHAPE FOR TENNIS  by

 Gregg Hal
1/31/2008 at 20:18
As you can see and think tennis is a pretty good sport to do if you are in need of some exercise. It is not a sport that you can just do and then lay around. It is one of those types of sports where when you are playing it you are constantly running and trying to keep up with it. I have played tennis and I know what it takes to play the sport. You do not have to be in top shape to play the sport but if you are going to be actually playing the sport then you need to be able to run quick and get to the ball so you can hit it back. Tennis is a cardio sport and you need to be able to do that in order to play this sport.

If you have the energy to go running or jogging then you have the ability to play a good game of tennis. It is just one of those sports that you need to be able to run and keep up with yourself or your teammate that you are playing tennis with. Running is just part of the game and if you cannot run or jog for at least like 20 to 30 minutes then you are not going to be able to play the game of tennis because it will be too hard on you and you will more then likely get sick. So if you are out of shape then you ...

THE BASICS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START PLAYING TENNIS  by

 Gregg Hall
1/31/2008 at 20:18
If you have ever stopped to actually think about the game and sport of tennis you would soon realize that it is not that hard of a sport and most people can learn to play it. There are some basic rules that you need to know before you start playing but you will soon learn about them. You will need to be in pretty good shape to play a real game of tennis.

The first things that you are going to need when you are first starting off playing the game of tennis is a tennis racket, a few tennis balls and some tennis shoes and some light clothing to play in. You will want to wear light clothing so you can get around your clothes and get to the tennis ball to hit it back across court. You will learn how to play the game quick it’s not that hard of a sport and you will be playing in no time at all.

The tennis court that you are playing on must be full size regulation or the people that you are playing with are going to say well your side of the court was bigger and you will just have arguments. The net goes in the dead middle of the court and there is a service line that runs parallel to it. Where you will start playing at will be at the base line these lines are the last set of lines in the back if the court and that ...

HOW TO AVOID LOSING TO HIGHER RANKED OPPONENTS  by

 Matthias Mazur
1/31/2008 at 20:16
It’s always difficult to play tennis opponents which are ranked higher than you. Of course, you’ll feel excited and nervous and it’s easy to allow your fear to overcome you. However, there are certain key mental points that you can use in order to overcome this fear rather than succumbing to it. Here are those mental points and how to utilize them to play strategically against a higher ranked opponent.

Realize Who the Pressure Is On

Hey, when you go out there to play this great opponent, you need to realize one thing. Although it might feel like all the pressure is on you, it’s not. The pressure is on your opponent because people expect him or her to beat you. Your opponent knows this as well. He understands that he’s the one in the spotlight and that they are the ones with everything to lose. You, on the other hand, have nothing to lose and everything to gain by playing strategically and realizing who the pressure is really on.

You’re Not Playing the Player

You’re playing their reputation. In fact, you might be just as great as they are in different areas. However, because they are ranked higher than you and are more popular, they’re favored while you are not. So, use this to your advantage. Realize that they’re simply a player just like you are. They also make mistakes just like you do. Remember that you’re not already defeated simply because they are the favorite.

Control Your Nerves

If you’re playing a higher ranked ...

HOW TO BOOST YOUR MENTAL TENNIS TOUGHNESS  by

 Matthias Mazur
1/31/2008 at 20:14
Tennis is a very physical game, but at the same time it requires a strong mental toughness. Without this foundation of mental toughness, you can be in for some serious heartbreaks and painful experiences. There are some really great ways that you can develop this but most of all it comes from simply experiencing the game. It takes time to build up the callous that you will need in order to play with precision, without allowing frustrations and stresses to break you during your game. Here are a few mental tennis tips that will help you develop a strong mental toughness foundation for tennis.

Losing

No one enters a game of tennis expecting to lose. However, each time you lose, your mental toughness develops a bit more. This is especially true if you experience a heartbreaking loss, such as being tied and then losing the tie breaker. Other examples might include winning the first set and then losing the match, having a match point and then losing a match, or even losing to a very lesser ranked player when you’ve already beaten an amazing player just before. Any of these things would cause a very painful loss, because you’re pretty sure that you’re going to win. It’s like having the tournament in your hand and then dropping it. These things are necessary to build up a mental toughness for tennis.

Another thing that will help you develop this strong mental toughness foundation would be getting too frustrated by things outside of the game ...

HOW TO BUILD A SOLID TENNIS MENTAL FOUNDATION  by

 Matthias Mazur
1/31/2008 at 20:12
Tennis is one of the most toughest games out there. It demands not only speed, strength and stamina, but it’s a lot of mental toughness. In order to improve your game, you need to develop a very strong mental foundation. Without it, the fear that you may experience on the court can make your game drown, and result in a upsetting losses. There are a couple of things that can happen as a result of fear, and there are ways to overcome it as well. Here are a few tips.

Causes of Fear

Tennis is so exhilarating when you’re winning and it can be so devastating when you’re losing. If you’re playing a great game and begin to mess up or get into a bit of trouble, fear can really cause you to panic and lose the game. This is true even when you would have usually gotten away with it. The fear seems to take control and render you unable to play the game as well as you normally would have. This is due to having a weak mental foundation for playing the game.

Another way that the fear can mess you up is if you are winning. Why would you fear that? Well, some people start to get nervous when they are winning and they begin to defend their lead. This will make them start to play cautiously and stop doing the things they were doing which brought them to the lead in the first place. They may stop the aggressive ...

IMPROVING YOUR SERVE  by

 Jonathon Hardcastle
1/31/2008 at 20:11
Tennis is a tough game, both physically and mentally, and requires a great deal of effort and dedication to improve. Having said that, by devoting the time to learn new techniques, and consolidate your existing game, you can improve your overall on-court performance in no time. One of the most important aspects of tennis is the serve.

It’s your chance to score heavily, but it’s also your opponents chance to break you down, and smash your spirits. During the serve, the pressure is definitely on, to impress and score consistently. However, by resorting to the basics, and ensuring you remember each vital point, you can work towards establishing a solid routine for more consistent serving.

To start off, you should think about your stance. Although it’s not the most glamorous part of the game, it is definitely crucial to providing a solid foundation for a solid serve. Ensure that your feet are pointing in the right direction, and that they remain around a shoulder’s width apart.

It’s also crucial to keep your knees bent, as this will allow you to generate the necessary power through your toss to give you that strong serve. Additionally, you should probably try to maintain a Continental grip through your first serve to generate raw power through the ball. Although this might not feel the most comfortable, it is definitely worth it, and you’ll find it becomes a great deal easier as you become more used to it.

Another vital aspect of the serve is the toss. The toss ...

GOAL SETTING TO HIT YOUR TENNIS TARGETS  by

 Paul Gold
1/31/2008 at 20:10
It is well known that to be a great tennis player you have to use your mental as well as your physical skills. These tennis mental skills are as vital in terms of your tennis training as hitting forehands and backhands. Let’s be honest, the more successful players are mentally tougher than the others! Is it a fluke that Federer and Sampras have so many titles and Safin so few for a player of his ability?

What do people mean when they say Nadal is so mentally tough? Can your mind game get you through matches? Is your mental approach more important than than your technique? One of the most powerful tennis psychology skills is that of goal setting.

Goal setting is a powerful way to turn your tennis vision of the future into reality. By knowing exactly what you want to achieve you will be able to concentrate all of your efforts in the right directions as well as being able to quickly spot any distractions that may pop up. Also, you will find that well-set goals are very motivating. Your self-confidence will explode as you start setting and achieving goals and get nearer to your overall target.

How To Do Goalsetting

First create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your tennis.
Second, break these down into smaller and smaller chunks that become weekly goals.
Finally, now you have your plan, start working towards achieving it.

SMART Goals

The best way to make goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. SMART ...
