SOLAR HEATING - A SOLUTION FOR WINTER SWIMMING POOLS  by

 Scott Byers
1/26/2008 at 20:44
When the summer months pass and the temperature starts to drop you may discover that a dip in the pool leaves your teeth chattering and your body shivering for hours afterwards. If you’re like most people, this would not be a very pleasant experience for you. In many areas of the country this has always been a problem for swimming pool owners who find themselves unable to swim in during the winter.

How can this be avoided?

There have been many heating solutions developed for swimming pools over the years. Currently the most popular are heat and gas pumps. While cheaper to set up, gas pumps are more expensive in the long run given the rising price of gas in recent years. Heat pumps are a bit more expensive to set up initially, but will prove to have lower maintenance costs. Both types of pumps, however, suffer from serious flaws. Neither gasoline nor electricity mix very well with water. A gas leak will contaminate the water, and I don’t think I need to explain what would happen if you happened to be swimming while an electrical malfunction occurred.

To overcome these dangerous challenges, you may want to consider solar heating for your swimming pool. It is possible to install solar panels which will collect energy from the sun and use that energy when needed to provide heat to the water, keeping it warm even during the cold winter months.

Over the long term, a solar heating solution is even more cost-effective than either the ...

3 POOL ACCESSORIES EVERYONE NEEDS FOR THEIR SWIMMING POOL  by

 Stacy Anthony
1/26/2008 at 20:44
These are 3 pool accessories that are an important part for every pool. They help to keep it clean and help you to enjoy your pool.

Recommended Pool Accessories #1 – Pool Pump

Choosing the right size pool pump and filter for your size pool is a very important step when you purchase your pool. The pump circulates the water and the filter system helps keep the harmful, unwanted items from returning to the pool. If you get a system too small, it won’t keep up with the needs of the pool.

The pool pump can also be used to help circulate the chemicals that are used in the pool to help stabilize the water making it safe to swim. Bacteria can build up in the pool when the temperature is warm or just from you swimming in the pool. Chemicals like chlorine, bromine, shock and algaecide are the most commonly used in pools. Chemical kits can also be purchased to open your pool at the beginning of the season and to help you close your pool at the end of the season.

Recommended Pool Accessories #2 – Pool Chemicals

Adding the chemicals to your swimming pool is the easy part, but knowing what you need to add is not always easy. Therefore, you will need a test kit. There are a couple of types that you can choose from. There are the test strips and the test kits. The test strip you put in the water and simply hold it up to a chart ...

IS THE POOL IONIZER TRULY EFFECTIVE?  by

 Ben E. Anderson
1/26/2008 at 20:43
While looking for new methods to maintain a healthy swimming pool more and more people are looking into chemical free pools. This leads us to the search and understanding of a pool ionizer. A pool ionizer works simply by adding copper and silver to your pool. While an ionizer used properly is safe how exactly efficient is it?

A pool ionizer works fairly simple but implementing silver and copper ions into the water. These ions work to kill bacteria and algae that are present. The problem comes when this is not exactly fully effective. When an algae problem gets out of hand during the time a pool is dormant and covered people are finding it very hard to get copper levels high enough to kill the algae that is present. If your pool gets beyond the green algae and your issues are black algae you will find it almost impossible to get the copper levels high enough to tackle this problem.

To tackle winterization problems people are finding that they need to add a non copper based algaecide to there pools and run there pool ionizer on max for a few days bumping ppb up to higher then normal levels. Then upon opening the pool after the winterization period is over they have to run the pool ionizer again on max for a few days. Then placing the system on a time to run during long periods of the day to maintain there pools properly. There is a lot of work that ...

10 REASONS YOU NEED SWIMMING LESSONS  by

 Matthew J James

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons are an essential part of a child’s education, and whether they learn to swim at school, or at private lessons, being able to swim increases confidence, and can become an enjoyable and healthy total fitness hobby.

For adults who have never learnt to swim, or for those who haven’t been swimming for a long time, why not learn to swim today? Swimming lessons aren’t just for children.

Here are 10 reasons to book swimming lessons, and learn to swim today

1) Swimming lessons, and ultimately being able to swim brings many benefits, such as feeling safe near water, and enjoying being by the swimming pool and feeling confident enough to try other water sports perhaps whilst on holiday. Imagine being able to water ski, or sail a boat, or go sea fishing. Even just being on the beach or investigating rock pools requires a certain level of water safety, especially where children are concerned.

2) Many swimming pools and swimming clubs offer swimming lessons to children as young as 3. Your child is likely to enjoy learning to swim, and will experience a great sense of achievement as they progress from the first moments away from the side of the pool, swimming without armbands, and gaining badges and certificates. Swimming lessons for children are usually around 30 minutes long each, and parents can often spectate.

3) If you didn’t have swimming lessons as a child, you may think that you have missed out on being able to swim, but this needn’t be ...

SALT WATER POOLS - ARE THEY REALLY BETTER?  by

 Ben E. Anderson
1/26/2008 at 20:41
Salt water pools can cause damage to your environment, your pool equipment, and your skin, not to mention your overall health. Because the chemicals used to treat salt water pools, namely chlorine, can be harmful to your health, it would be a good idea to explore other options available to you.

The backsplash water from salt water pools can kill any vegetation that happens to be near the pool as the chemicals will splash out with the water. Those harsh chemicals can do terrible things to your pool equipment and any decorations you might have near the pool as well. Decorative rock formations near salt water pools have been known to deteriorate and decay from the abrasive chlorine and salt chemicals used to treat salt water pools.

Salt water pools and the chemicals they use to clean the water can cause a feeling of dryness in your skin and irritate your eyes, making them red and puffy. The chlorine in salt water pools can cause a change to your hair color and can fade your swimwear. The vibrant colors of your bright orange or bright pink swimming attire won’t stay vibrant with prolonged use in salt water pools.

Chlorine, used to treat salt water pools, has been linked to possible asthma incidents. Inhaling chlorine fumes into your lungs is dangerous and can be painful. Studies involving chlorine have also linked it to bladder and rectal cancers, as well as heart disease.

There are more natural cleaning systems so that you don’t have to rely ...

IN GROUND LAP POOLS - DESIGNED FOR FITNESS  by

 Ryan McCall
1/26/2008 at 20:40
When thinking about swimming pools, most people envision the elaborate design and landscaping associated with hotel and resort pools. While pools certainly can be used for recreational purposes a growing number of people are recognizing swimming for its exercise benefits. More and more pools are being built with fitness in mind.

A large reason why so many pools are built with fitness in mind is that swimming is a highly effective form of exercise. Not only is it an aerobic exercise comparable to walking or even running, but it is less stressful on joints because the water supports the body and reduces the force of impacts. To facilitate swimming for fitness, special pools have been designed, such as above-ground or in ground lap pools.

A lap pool is a small, rectangular shaped pool that was created for the sole idea of swimming laps. The primary purpose of this pool is for exercise instead of recreational swimming. Regular swimming pools are often circular or have unique shapes, whereas these are often long and narrow. Sometimes, these pools are only one lane long - perfect for a back and forth swim.

A neat feature to some is to have a flowing current. A one directional current can be added to both the above ground or inground lap pools. The purpose of this is to provide an endless swimming pool feature. This provides an excellent workout for the avid exerciser as they attempt to swim against the current. In ground ones can be put indoors or ...

WATER SPORTS FOR KIDS  by

 Ron Victor
1/26/2008 at 20:39
For kids, water sports are adventurous and fun filled. But safety has to be given first priority. All kids should compulsorily wear life jackets, even if kids know how to swim. All boats and rafts should also carry extra life jackets, whistle and lifebuoys. Water sports need to be accompanies by an adult who must know how to swim, preferable accompanied by an attentive lifeguard. He should also know what to do during times of emergency and A B Cs of giving first aid. Water sports should always be carried out, when the climate is pleasant. If the climate is sunny, do apply sun screen cream to protect yourself from radiations.

There are different kinds of water sports for children, some are for pleasure and some are very adventurous and exciting. Let’s start with a simple water sport like boating, which is very much enjoyable. In most of the kids and youths camps you’ll find boating and canoing. Don’t forget to carry your life jackets while you get into the boat. Always you need to follow what your instructor or guide says. Sailing is adventurous when the wind is good. Once you have enough practice, you can begin to participate in your local sailing competitions! If you want an adventurous water sport, then sailing has to be your first choice! Most nature loving kids will choose scuba diving, where kids will be able to learn more about the fascinating world of animals and it also helps them to develop empathy towards ...

WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE GETTING IN THE POOL MAKES  by

 Anne Bachrach
1/26/2008 at 20:39
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to avoid doing the very things we know will get us the results we say we want? Have you ever avoided doing something you knew was absolutely necessary, but had no idea why you were avoiding it? Me too.

In every endeavor, there are certain immutable requirements or "natural laws" of success. Yet sometimes, in attempts to avoid discomfort or achieve our goals with less effort or anxiety, we spend too much time and energy hoping to flout those laws. But it can’t, won’t, simply doesn’t work. That’s why they’re called laws. Break them and you lose.

In December of 1997 my husband, Bill, began training for the 1998 Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, which was held on October 3, 1998. Nine to 10 months is not a long time to prepare for a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike ride (humid and very windy), and 26.2-mile marathon run. But it’s achievable if you create a good plan and stick to it (which my husband did).

Swimming has never been his strength, and he hadn’t been in the pool in a decade. The rest of his training program started out pretty well. He began running again by steadily building up his mileage. He pulled his bike off the hooks in the garage where it had been hanging upside down for a long time, dusted it off, got it tuned up, and began riding. He even started pumping iron twice a week to build his strength. But the swimming...

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SWIMMING POOL PUMP  by

 Tony Shipp
1/26/2008 at 20:38
When choosing to put a swimming pool in your yard, many people may focus on just the size and shape of the pool as opposed to its hardest working mechanism, the swimming pool pump. The reason the pool pump is so important is because it is responsible for pushing and pulling water in and out of your pool. They are all not the same so it’s important to consider which pump is going to do the best job for your type of pool. This will help you to avoid problems in the future.

There are other things to consider that will help you to rate the pool pumps for sale. These include the price, its level of efficiency as well as the type of warranty that comes with it. You certainly want to make sure that the warranty is a good one and covers all of the essential workings of the pump.

Before you head off to the pool supply store, you might want to do a little investigating on your own. After all, you don’t want to be talked into purchasing an expensive pool pump that you don’t really need. It’s better to go online to different manufacturing sites and check out the information there. This way you can walk into the store, armed with the knowledge that you need to ask intelligent questions and make the right decision.

You can also ask the person who is doing the installation about which is the best pool pump for your needs. Don’t just ...

POOL ACCESSORIES - THINGS YOU NEED FOR GREAT POOL FUN  by

 Jeffrey Meier
1/26/2008 at 20:37
Nothing is more fun than jumping in the pool on a very hot summer day. Keeping the pool in great shape and working right all the time you will need the following pool accessories. We have some of the most important things you will need to keep it running at peak performance.

Maybe one of the most import pool accessories you will need is a pump. This is important for many reasons and some things must be known before you go out and purchase one. Knowing the size of the pool will be needed to get a pool pump. The pump circulates the water through the filter system and keeps unwanted items out of the swimming area. This helps protect people who use it and keeps it at peak performance. Many people will sometimes get a cheaper pump thinking it’s a good deal. You’re better off in the long run to always go with the better one. Circulating chemicals are another big benefit that over time you will appreciate. It will give you less trouble and more time to enjoy your pool.

Chemicals are another one of the accessories that you will also need to buy and that is the easy part. The really hard part knows exactly how much you need to add. One way to help you out is with test strips. These strips you put in the water and hold them up to a chart and it will tell you what needs to be added to your pool. This ...

HOW TO DIVE FROM A POOLSIDE  by

 Luzia Braun
1/26/2008 at 20:36
Perform the following steps carefully:

1. Sit on the edge of the pool with your feet in the water. Lower your head so that your chin touches your chest. Clasp your hands and place them on the water surface, aimed toward the bottom. From this position, roll into the water.

2. Sit on the edge of the pool with your heels in the gutter, knees spread. Reach your arms toward the water. With head down between your arms and chin on chest, roll into the water.

3. Kneel on both knees on the edge of the pool. Keep your head down and aim your hands for the bottom of the pool. Lean forward and fall into the water, head down at all times.

4. With one foot on the edge and the other foot in the gutter, bend forward on one knee. Push off from the side of the pool with both feet and drop into the water.

5. Stand on one leg on the edge of the pool, holding the other leg to the rear. Aim for the bottom with your hands, head always down. Have someone lift your rear leg and aim you toward the water. Try this without anyone’s help, kicking your rear leg high so that you’ll rotate enough for a head-first entry. As you kick, push away from the edge of the pool with the toes of your standing leg.

6. Now, measure off several steps away from the edge of the pool. Turn around and walk rapidly to the edge, ...

POOL TOYS - GAMES AND RELAXATION  by

 Molly Mcdonald
1/26/2008 at 20:35
The primary reasons people swim in the summer are to cool off, relax and have fun. Pool toys help you relax and have fun. After you dive in the water and get cooled off, what next? You could go lay out and read a book, or not. It’s a lot more fun to get out your pool toys.

There are pool games for large groups and also for small groups.

Large Groups

Volleyball:

Pool volleyball or pool basketball are the most fun for large groups. If you have a wide variety of ages (i.e. grandparents with grandkids) you should definitely go with volleyball.

Basketball:

Works best with those of similiar age and athletically inclined. It is a difficult game to play if you can’t swim or jump very well.

Small Groups

Remote Control Toys:

A remote control sailboat or fish are the most popular. These toys can be fun in small groups or alone. If you get a remote control sailboat, you can also take it to the lake.

Dive Toys:

Fins and snorkel can enhance swimming. Other diving toys are pirate coins and sunken treasure(there are many styles to choose from). When I was a kid we used to take the lid off an old mason jar to dive for.

Relaxation Pool Toys

Remote Lounge:

A foam lounge is very popular. It has more stability than inflatable lounges. There is a remote lounge that has a joystick to move around in the water.

Coolers:

Coolers make is so you don’t have to go into the house a lot. You can put your floating cooler in ...

CARE FOR A SHORT DIP IN A LONG POOL?  by

 Joseph Parish
1/26/2008 at 20:33
Are you a swimmer looking for a unusual place to partake of your favorite sport? Do you loathe swimming in public pools and prefer to take your dip in the great seas and mighty oceans? Do I have news for you!

Be prepared to experience the swim of your life. This swimming pool measures a whopping 1,000 yards long and retains a ultimate coverage of 20 full acres. At its deepest part is measures 115 feet deep and to fill it takes 66 million gallons of water. The water within the pool is so sparkler clear that you are able to see the bottom even in the deep end of the lagoon. Think about receiving that water bill!

This gargantuan pool is located in the vicinity of the Sea of Chile and was recently listed within the Guinness Book of Records as the largest artificial pool in existence. It entailed five long years of construction for this marvel to be built at a cost of nearly two billion American dollars. The annual upkeep alone for this colossal venture outlays four million dollars per year.

The pool is computer administered, in that a PC controls the entire water filtering system bringing in thousands of gallons of fresh ocean water into the structure while pumping it out at the other end of the pool. The pool is solar heated by the sun to a comfortable temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit, which is on the order of nine degrees warmer, then the adjoining ocean.

Prior to this ...

CHOOSING A SANITIZING SYSTEM FOR YOUR POOL  by

 Rob Coxworth
1/26/2008 at 20:33
In today’s pool market it seems there are more ways to keep a pool clean and inviting than ever before: ionizers, salt water systems, Baquacil and its cousins in addition to chlorine. All sorts of claims are made from no chlorine use at all to lower levels, better water quality and less maintenance. What is a pool owner to do to separate fact from hype?

The application of a few common sense rules can help separate fact from fiction in choosing a sanitizing system that will deliver satisfactory results year after year.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Any sanitizing system that makes incredible or revolutionary claims is probably something to avoid. No one has yet figured out a way to keep pool water clean and inviting without some help from the pool owner. Be especially leery of systems that claim to eliminate chlorine entirely. The main purpose of chlorine in a pool is to chemically burn out complex organics that provide food for algae and bacteria. Without this oxidizing function a swimming pool WILL go bad. Maybe not immediately but at some point and in spectacular fashion.

Be very skeptical of sanitizing systems that are proprietary and available only from select sources. Be especially careful with systems that are incompatible with pool chemicals in general use. The holy grail of pool sanitizing manufacturers has been to supplant chlorine as the king of pool care. Chlorine is a heavily regulated commodity and by law is only available in certain ...
